20th Century Fox Presents: Son of God

Their Empire... His Kingdom

First thing's first, "Son of God" is a film taken directly from the critically acclaimed miniseries "The Bible" This is the Chronicles of Jesus throughout the bible as it played out in that context. Now, that being the case, this film as a stand alone movie is one of the biggest budget motion pictures for a biblical film since "Passion of the Christ" and is the first of many to be released by major motion picture companies to hit the big screen, which for me as a christian is a great thing to see some real money getting put behind these films, rather than straight to video low budget christian films we are accustomed to. This is the first film to focus on a story about Jesus since the controversial "Passion of The Christ" and has every bit as much muscle behind it. This time the film is spoken in English, which isn't accurate, but for the viewer makes the film easier to follow. This film is something I feel everyone who is a christian should see and if you're not a christian i suggest watching it, it may change your life forever... Here... WE... GO!

The film begins with the narration of pieces of the bible not scene in this film. In the beginning there was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God, and then the word became flesh. This film is told by and narrated by John one of Jesus' decibels. Who had been banished into exile, for going out and spreading the teachings of Jesus. The film begins with the birth of Jesus, we all know the Christmas story, as the wise men followed the stars to the savior of all the world born of the virgin Mary. What is his name? Jesus... And we are off and running and the world would be changed forever. No matter what you believe, agnostic, aithiest, or what have you, no one can deny the way that the life of Jesus of Nazareth had changed the world forever.

We move on to see the brutality of the Romans over the Jewish people, and the new Roman governor, Ponches Piolet. They craved a messiah, and that is where we meet up with Jesus, now a grown man, walking across the mountain top looking down upon the waters of Gallelee. This is where we are introduced to Peter, and the what will set in motion the events that would change the world forever. Peter is off to go fishing... in a sea that has no fish, so why is going? I dunno hoping maybe? But Jesus is helped into the boat, and Jesus says to Peter to hive him an hour and he will give him a whole new life. Wonce out fishing, where there are no fish, Jesus runs his hands through the water and suddenly there are thousands of fish. Keep in mind this is the biblical story, I mean none of this in jest or mocking in any way. The film is portrayed this way because it was how it was written by the apostles. Jesus tells Peter to give up catching fish, and he will make him a fisher of men. Peter exclaims, "What are we going to do?" Jesus replies "Change the World" This line is particularly powerful to me, it shows that one man, can become two, and two become three... and one person can change the world. You dont have to be the son of God to change the world.

No matter where Jesus goes people seem to flock to him, his deciples grew quickly, the Jewish people are not too pleased by the works of Jesus, throughout the course of the film. Jesus tells, a crippled man that his sins are forgiven, and a jewish preist says only God has the autority to forgive sin, Jesus replies, "What is simpler to tell somone his sins are forgiven, or tell him to get up and walk" The crippled man stands up and walks. This is blasphemy among the jews, punishable by death, but Jesus never wavers, and just replies "The son of man has the authority to forgive sin". The apoltles are warned that his friend could be stoned for claims such as this, and Peter only replies "This is only the beginning" I'll try to keep this brief and not break down the film scene for scene but much of this is important. Piolet is warned that Cesar will not tolorate any disorder. Which we all know inevitably leads to the "Passion sequence" later to come. As the film goes, we quickly move from story to story well known throughout the bible, Jesus' forgivness of the tax collector Mathew, to the sermon on the mount, to the feeding of the five thousand.

Now this might seem like a bit choppy, but if they did not move swiftly throught much of this the film would be fifteen hours long. The life and time of Jesus can hardly be told in a two hour span, so the choppy stories for the first half of the film is easily forgiven, given the films just over two hour run time. The first half is pretty much quick five minute snippets of the most famous stories of Jesus, and how quickly the numbers grew. Things start to slow once we get to the las supper and the story of the Passion. Here is where the film becomes comparable to "The Passion of The Christ". The big difference here is that the film focus plenty on the life and times of Jesus before AND after the Passion. It is also far less violent, to obtain a PG-13 rating, which is something you really want in a film that can truly change the world. It reaches a broader audience, than say the R rated Passion of the Christ.

Honestly I'd love to break down the film scene for scene, because everything seems so important and I would love to tell you all about it, but if I did that then you would have no reason to go out and buy the film would you. I want to stress that while the fist half of the film IS choppy, it is also a very important part of the film, and doesn't hurt the film in the least. The story of the passion mirros the film of the same name but doesn't show nearly the graphic violence of the R rated film. He is still bloodied and beaten the way he was in the Passion but it doesnt show specifically how he got that way. Other than less graphic violence the Passion sequence is nearly identical to that of Passion of the Christ. What I truly love about this film is that it also shows what happened AFTER the ressurection of Jesus.

So I feel a tad bad for this review being a tad shorter than the others, but everything is so important in this film, I can either give you a summary of the events, or I can break down every scene, scene for scene. I for suer can not do it justice, it's better off seen for yourself. One line I perticularly love in this film, is when they go to the tomb when news of his body being gone spread. One of the apostles says "He's Gone" and Peter replies "No, He's BACK!" I get chills running up my spine every time I hear that line. It is the true word of the living God that has touched my soul. I hate to be so brief but this film is so good it must be seen for itself. The stories are already known all around the world, but this film brings them to life, and need to be seen for yourself.

Final Thoughts:
It feels strange cutting a film so short on my review, the thing is everyone knows the story. So this review can be thirty pages long, or a quick review of one of the most moving and inspirational films I've ever seen in my life. Passion of the Chirst opened the door for film's like this to be possible. And this opened the door for big budgets to be put behind original storyies like the moving films "God's Not Dead" and the true story "Heaven is for Real" and lets not forget "Noah" I belive this is only the beginning, and films like this will become new ways to spread the gospel for believers to come together. The word of God is spreading people, and like Peter said... This is only the beginning. My final though? Go out and BUY THIS FILM!

Final Rathing:
A RED HOT!!!
