A Fire Will Rise
Yup, It's Batman in his final (for now) epic. It had a lot to live up to after the success of "The Dark Knight" and I'm sure all of you are wondering just what PaulY thinks of Mr. Dark Knight and how he will intend to rise. In this incarnation we see Batman, everyone's favorite Dark Knight, returns from retirement now an old man, (though he hardly shows his age once dawning the cape) to face the worlds most vile and terrible enemy. Bane, with the league of shadows from "Batman Begins" yet again set on destroying Gotham because you know, the town is bad and stuff. But it's Batman to save the city and the day and will rise one last and final time to take down the league of shadows. Will Gotham burn to the ground in a fiery fire ball of death? Will Batman be able to end the horror that is the league of shadows? How long will it be before we get to see Ann Hathaway get into that catsuit? John, this is for you! It's time to review.... So...Here...we...GO!
"I believe in Harvey Dent" And apparently Commissioner Gorden still believes in Two Face. This is obviously to keep Harvey as Gotham's "White Night". But the movie wastes no time in getting started. Bane is introduced in mere minutes into the film which is great, because we get to meet our new antagonist right away, knowing full well the legend he will have to live up to, Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight". Bane, articulate and smart along with his brute strength knows, even with a bag over his head that the people on the plane are bluffing. "Perhaps they are wondering why you would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?" Good stuff right off the bat. When the "mastermind" threatens to take off Bane's mask he replies "It will be very painful... For you" Which is just more great stuff off the bat. It's only a mere seconds before you find out that it was Bane's plan all along to get caught, again, smart and strong. Of course one of Bane's terrorists has no problem dying for his cause and that makes the scene that much more believable. "Calm down Dr. Now is not the time for fear, that comes later" yet another great line from Bane right off the bat to establish him as a worthy yet intimidating force.
The city is still celebrating Harvey Dent, after dieing as "Two Face" in the Dark Knight, he gave their city hope, the hope that the city needed. The blame placed on The Batman for his death, making him the hero that the city deserves... or was it needed? I forget. The movie truly hits the ground running as we are introduced to Catwoman only minutes after being introduced to Bane, some might think this is too much too early, but it comes off really well. For those who havent seen the film, I wont spoil it yet but we are also introduced to a THIRD villain in the movie at the same time who will for now go on remaining nameless. Bruce Wayne, now walking with the cane, hardly The Batman that he once was is given the impression that he will never be able to dawn the suit again, making it all the more important when he inevitably does.
Shortly after being introduced to three villains we are introduced to a second hero. But we will get back to him later. Batman who is no longer Batman is found in the Batcave doing research and in very Bruce Wayne fashion figures out who Catwoman is within seconds, who at this time is only seen as a cat burglar Selena Kyle. I do love how everyone including Alfred refer to The Batman as a separate entity from Bruce Wayne. It's clear that the majority in Gotham still want to believe in The Batman regardless of the way the city slanders him, even years after he has been gone. Catwoman is seen selling Wayne's finger prints to a shady fellow in a shady bar, with shady associate's so all and all the whole situation seems a bit shady to me. Ms Kyle is a wonderful actress as swat shows up where they find her screaming like an innocent grown baby.
I always love it when police go down into the sewers to chase a perp, I always hope they find the Ninja Turtles down there. An explosion ensues just after, my first assumption is that this is the Ninja Turtles doing to keep the police from discovering their hid out. Then I realize that this is a Batman movie... Whoops... It's Bane, and of course he kills his fellow terrorists with one hand before telling the other that he is going to kill him as well. It's just so Bane of him, to tell someone to their face that he is going to kill them, prior to doing it. Our second hero, who found the Commish said that the police asked if he also found any giant alligators down there, an obvious reference to the "Killer Croc" but unfortunately we dont get to see him this go around. Our second hero is a policeman, who grew up in a boys home founded by the Wayne foundation, this then clearly shows how he knows that Bruce Wayne is The Batman, because all kids who grow up in the boys homes founded by the Wayne foundation know Bruce Wayne is Batman. It's just common knowledge. Again, another reference to The Batman as a separate entity from Bruce Wayne, I love that. I'll probably reference it every time it happens.
Wayne shows up in a hospital, in suite and tie, looking as if he has not aged a day from just moments ago, he has jumped backward about 10 years in age. However, his doctor gives him the bad news that his body is pretty much dead, and he might as well go coffin shopping not suiting up as The Batman, but hey, who's the doctor here? What does he know? I find it a tad odd that everyone wants The Batman to "Rise" once more, as if he is some superhuman being who hasnt aged a day in ten years. Forget the fact that Bruce Wayne is the Batman, even if he were not, the Batman was still just some guy in a suit. "What if he doesnt exist anymore?" "He must" ...Hmmm... I dunno... maybe the Batman died? He did live a dangerous lifestyle. Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne and Batman is second to none, and I have to admit I'm disappointed that they recast the role for Man of Steel 2.
Morgan Freeman, who plays a character but I cant remember his name so we'll just call him Morgan Freeman. He manages to convince Bruce Wayne to bring back The Batman with little effort, giving him a monster knee brace that apparently heals all his wounds the doctor told us all about earlier. So what happens? Is it the return of the Batman? Does Batman Return? He does.... Just so we are all on the same page here. Just in time to see Bane being all Bane again, I have to admit with having to live up to Ledger's Joker, he holds his own, and is just so Bane in every scene. All without ever really seeing the man's face. Bane on a motorcycle, you think it would look odd... but it doesnt... It's very Bane of him, and just when Bane goes all Bane on his motorcycle... guess who's back... everyone's favorite Dark Knight. Yup, it's the Batman. Unfortunately the police are none to happy to see him... You know killing Harvey Dent and all. They hate the Batman so much that they decide to leave Bane and his terrorists to chase The Batman. The caped crusader is pretty much #1 on the Gotham most wanted list, but dont worry, it takes Batman very little effort to evade the police.
I'm gonna say this one last time before it gets old... Bane is about to go all Bane again. Stealing every scene he is in. Oh! There it is, Catwoman Catsuit, goodness, yup definitely worth the wait. It must be hard to fight in high heels but she does it with ease. She matches The Batman punch for punch, even in heels. Now this could be a sign that The Batman has lost a step, which, since he is practically a dead body, is pretty impressive... For The Batman. The relationship between Alfred and Wayne is shown in great detail, but Alfred seems to value it more that Wayne, at least at this point. I think its time to talk about Ms. Tate, who for now seems like a tad of a minor character, only interested in Wayne's fusion reactor to create a clean renewable power source. How very Tony Stark of him, Wayne is concerned that if it falls into the wrong hands it can be turned into a nuclear bomb. I'm not an expert in nuclear fusion but obviously it can be easily turned into a nuclear bomb. Bane is back... and yeah... you guessed it he is being all... yeah.
Selena Kyle is obsessed with this "Clean Slate" thing, that clearly doesnt exist because even in the movie it seems highly unlikely to actually exist. Perhaps she wouldn't need a "Clean Slate" if she wouldnt go around steeling everything from everyone. I mean hey, Bruce Wayne had every cent stole from him because of her actions, why doesnt she deserve a clean slate? Catwoman leads The Batman straight into Bane's trap where Bane, knows that The Batman is Bruce Wayne which probably means that Bane must have been in one of the boys home's funded by the Wayne foundation. Bane precedes to kick the ever loving shit out of the Batman, and he finally shows his age. He snaps Bruce's back with a wrestling style back breaker, is he paralyzed? No... That would be silly when breaking a man's back. Bane then taunts Batman and then like he does, tells him to his face that he will break him. Bane walks away from the fight with a chunk of the "unbreakable" Batman mask and tosses it to the side like a piece of trash. How very Bane of him.
They take Bruce to some place in what looks to be in a middle eastern desert. Where is it? I have no idea, but it looks to be worlds away from Gotham. Apparently this ancient cell has has cable TV though, nice perks. Pretty sure it goes without saying that Bane is bein all Bane again. Ms. Tate activates "The Bomb" for Bane... This will be important later. It takes less than two minutes for the scientist to convert it from a fusion reactor into a nuclear bomb, I'm sure this is supposed to be somewhat of a time laps between scene to scene, but things are starting to move into high gear a little too fast for the pacing for me, its s tarting to seem a bit rushed. Unfortunately, with the films 165 minute running time the pace needs to pick up to keep the attention of the audience as well as getting the film a reasonable running time. No one wants to watch a film 3 and and a half hours long, which I'm convinced if they didnt pick up the pace it would probably hit. It's definitely the epic they were looking for, unfortunately they dont have enough time to tell this story. Basically, the movie gets a bit choppy in the second half, but not enough to hurt the film all that much.
So Bane locks down the city, no one in, no one out. Remember this, its important later on. Oh how Bruce loves his city, he is seen crying watching cable down in his underground cave jail. He loves Gotham so much that he is going to achieve what no one has done, and rise and climb out of the underground cave jail. All of Batman's hard work is no more as everyone imprisoned from the Dent Act is freed. Even our friend the Scare Crow from "Batman Begins" comes out of the shadows. What happened to The Joker? Oh yeah... never mind. Anyway, once they fix Wayne's back, they waste little time getting Wayne out of the hole, so he can "Rise" dont ya know. I think it's clear why this film is titled "The Dark Knight Rises". The standard police is ignorant like in most films superhero or not, only a select few are actually competent, one being our second hero.
Flash back to Wayne falling down into a cave... a bat cave... from when he is younger, his father asking "Why do we fall?" Well obviously it's to... RISE! And of course as Wayne climbs out of the hole...the other prisoners are chanting in some strange language when asked what that means its translated into ... you guessed it... "Rise". So Bruce Wayne rises out of the whole in the middle eastern desert which looks to be, India, or I dont know Iran or something. All the while the good old criminals are sentencing civilians to "Death" or "Exile" ...Exile being walking out onto ice that they will most definitely fall through and die... another thing to remember for later.
So...Going back to where Bane locked down the city, no one in, no one out. Bruce Wayne just strolls in, all the way from Afghanistan... because... you know... HE'S Batman! The Commish is arrested by the citizens of Gotham aka the criminals who sentence him and his officers to death... by exile. By exile of course they mean going out onto the ice that you are certain to fall through. Now, the interesting part here, is not only do they not fall through the ice, but a flair shows up out of nowhere and the fire from the flair DOESN'T MELT THE ALREADY THIN ICE but guess who comes walking in from the other direction? Oh I bet you thought I was gonna say it was Bane going all Bane again... but its... BATMAN! And the ice? It doesnt break... because... because HE'S BATMAN! And wait one second, how did the caped crusader get his Batman suit when all his toys and goodies were stolen by Bane? Who knew Wayne was Batman... destroyed the Batman suit... Guess who had another one lying around somewhere... BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN!
I should have shown more attention to how good Hathaway looks in her Catsuit. It's just... Yum... Anyway, Batman also had another flying "Bat" laying around somewhere cuz he's flyin around in that too... BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN! Once Batman and Bane have round 2, Bane still kicks the ever loving shit out of Batman, until Batman gets lucky and damages Bane's mask. Why he never went for the mask the first time around... well... because he's Batman? Anyway, after damaging the Bane Mask, Batman finally gets the best of Bane and then proceeds to scream "WHERES DA TRIGGAR!" I only bring this up, because it's quite possibly the funniest line in the movie. Oh now, Ms. Tate... who is our THIRD villain I brought up at the beginning of the film walks up and brings Batman to his knees stabbing him in between the plates, which if we remember back to "The Dark Knight" our good friend Morgan Freeman tells Wayne, that separation of the plates makes him more vulnerable to knives. Now here comes the BIG 'OL TWIST... Ms. Tate is the daughter of Roz ah Goul (or however you spell it) She is back to return to finish what her father started in "Batman Begins". Right when she thinks she's about to destroy the city... Whoops... the TRIGGAR! didnt work. It's almost a funny moment.
So unfortunately, Bane... who's been all Bane the entire film, is killed. Killed in about two seconds. Yup, so no more Bane, and it wasnt even Batman who killed him. So essentially The Batman was Bane's bitch. Catwoman kills Bane in a matter of seconds, something The Batman struggled to do since the very beginning. So no more Bane, Baneing up every scene he is it, oh well... moving on to the catsuit again... I'm sorry but its just very distracting! But in the good, I cant take my eyes off her ass kind of way. Ms. Tate activates the reactor, meaning that the bomb is going to go off... which is bad... You know, for everyone. If only there were some sort of Man of Steel who could save the day.... Batman is going to take the bomb with his flying "Bat" taking it over the ocean for it to blow. Now... lets just see how far he can get before it explodes.... Probably a good 20-25 miles but quote "Clear of the city" So the mushroom cloud of nuclear fallout will do nothing to the good citizens of Gotham because the bomb was "Clear of the City" because... because BATMAN! Now Batman clearly dies in the explosion it was far to large for him to have gotten away even if he ejected somehow. But guess who didnt die... Bruce Wayne! Hence the two different entities between Bruce Wayne and The Batman. Now clearly this was not a physical difference but hey, Batman dies and Bruce Wayne survives. Why? BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN!
Our good friend the only competent police officer is revealed to be "Robin" but in an alternate universe also becomes "Nightwing" at least I think. This story follows that story, as he finds the batcave and looks as if he is going to assume the new identity of The Batman. Perhaps this is who they should have cast as Batman in "Man of Steel 2" makes sense, but no.

Final Thoughts
The Dark Knight Rises is a really good film, is it the epic they wanted it to be? They set themselves up with some big shoes to fill after "The Dark Knight". Bane was a wonderful villain who every bit lived up to Heath Ledger's Joker. His abrupt death seemed a bit of a let down, because I think we all wanted to see Batman get his final word in on Bane. I believe "The Dark Knight Rises" is a victim of its own circumstance. It needed to be an epic ending to an epic series and while I truly felt they swung for the fences and would have knocked any other series out of the park, this was just on par with "Batman Begins" and just a notch under "The Dark Knight". They set the bar so very high in the series that it would be almost impossible to come up with an epic ending any more epic than the series had already set for itself. Aside from all the "BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN" stuff the movie was phenomenal. I can over look the "Because he's Batman" stuff only because you dont even realize it when you are watching the film, its stuff you think about afterward, so I feel it didnt really hurt the film all that much. Bottom line "The Dark Knight Rises" is a great ending to a great series, but fell JUST short of the finish line they set for themselves.
Final Rating: 4.5 outa 5
